Musical Influence on a Violent Society Essay - 2671 Words
Musical Influence on a Violent Society The event in Littleton, Colorado, 5 years ago was a shocking wake up call to our society. Because of Eric Harris and Dylan Kleboldââ¬â¢s fanaticism with artists such as Marilyn Manson, music was labeled as the culprit for negatively influencing the youth of America. Music is a tool of expression that an artist uses to vent their frustrations and to reveal their emotions. However, these artists do not see the moral boundary that they have crossed with their emotionally disturbing lyrics and dark melodies. The depiction of sex and violence in rock and rap music and their videos influences children to take on the ways of the stars singing or acting on TV. This created a fad and more aggressive videos were becoming more and more popular. According to Arlin, this led to teens building up anger and hostility easily and when provoked by another individual, they tend to release their frustration through violence as seen in music videos (p. 491). One such example is Kornââ¬â¢s video for the song ââ¬Å"Freak on a Leash.â⬠This video begins with an animated group of children at a playground playing hopscotch. The video depicts a bullet flying though multiple objects destroying them and barely missing the children. The glorification of the destruction of private property with the use of guns is very apparent. It is only one step away from portraying gun usage as harmful to humans (Sherman, 2000). Another clear example of violence in music videos is Blink 182ââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"I Miss Youâ⬠video. In this video, two women commit suicide, one by slitting her wrists and the other by drowning herself.
